Executive Summary

My name is Colby Whitworth. I am 33 years old, and I am blessed to have the most wonderful wife and two beautiful children; Luke is our two-year-old boy and Laila is our seven-month-old baby girl. I am a full-time student at East Carolina University’s (ECU) College of Business, with hopes to graduate in the spring of 2023. I am also currently active-duty Navy and have been since 2005. For most of that time we have been stationed in San Diego, CA, but we have recently been transferred to Norfolk, VA. My goal is to have my BA for ECU’s College of Business prior to my retirement in 2026 so that I can roll right into a new career.

Resume

I hold the rank of a First-Class Petty Officer (E-6). The Chief Petty Officer (E-7) board is vastly approaching, and I have submitted a Letter To the Board (LTB) for their review. This is my Navy resume. Its drastically different from that of a civilian resume but its something that I have been working on for the past few months. I have included my LTB instead of my resume because this is the “resume” that means the most to me and like I said, It has consumed my life for the past few months by sitting down with every Chief Petty Officer that would take the time, getting their opinion on it, refining it, and then repeating the process.

Example Cases:

All my cases posted here are from ECU’s ENGL3880. I know that two of them are supposed to be from other ECU classes, other than ENGL3880, however, I do not have any work saved from any other classes. Maybe it’s me being naïve but I’m just not a person who clogged up my computer files with old files that will probably never be used again. I am very goal oriented. Once a class is complete, that chapter is closed, and I amon to the next project! I was never told that I would need old files from other classes and frankly, I don’t believethat a class can count or take off points for work completed in a prior class. So, I have posted three cases that I completed in this class, ENGL3880.

Case 1

This case assignment from ENGL3880 at ECU’s College of Business. I chose this case assignment because it is something that is very relevant in 2021. Our country is bringing to light the struggles for equal opportunity and for many years people have not fully understood what specifically should be included in the definition of equal opportunity. Law makers are doing better state by state to make laws to protect more and more of our equal opportunity freedoms, but we are still not all the way to the finish line. This project highlightsa very practical situation. The company is moving into a new larger office building and the HR department had received a few inquiries about whether the new office building would include a dedicated mothers nursing roomand also a gender-neutral bathroom. I was asked to address all the company’s employees about this situation.

Case 2

This case assignment from ENGL3880 at ECU’s College of Business. I chose this case assignment because it is something that is also very relevant in 2021. This case was based on the situation that a smaller insurance company was being bought out by a larger company due to the long-time owner’s retirement. I was asked to put together a report to address all the situations that may arise before, during, and after the transition to the new owners, and to advise on a smooth transition. I looked at addressing all the concerns that may come up from our customers as well as our employees. The major concern was that the small-town company feel maybe lost after the merger with a larger company. We investigated ways that we could mitigate this issue as well as a few other issues that we thought may arise during the transition.

Case 3

This case assignment from ENGL3880 at ECU’s College of Business. I chose this case assignment because it is something that is also very relevant in 2021. The assignment was to put together a report for my boss that informs her of the advantages and limitations of allowing our employees to work remotely, and to givemy recommendation for what our future of telecommuting should look like at our accounting firm. Prior to the 2020 global pandemic majority of our society commuted to and from work every day. Once the pandemic hit much of the word adapted to working from home. Systems may not have been in place before, but they were quickly implemented so that companies could continue work and allow their employees to do their work from the safety of their homes. After companies spent the last year refining their systems and overcoming growing pains of these new systems, companies mostly have it figured out pretty well now. So, the question is, “Why can’t we just keep our employees working from the safety of their homes?” What would be the benefit to bringing our employees back into the office when they can do the same work from home?” The answer cant just be, “because that’s the way it’s always been.” Society is ever changing and adapting. Is working from home just the next step in the future of our society? I think it may be.
